Coupled 3D CFD / 0D kinetics solver

Introduction

A direct coupling between a 0D PSR complex chemistry software package and a 3D CFD in-house code has been realised for simulating auto-ignition and combustion in DI Diesel engines.

Objectives

The objective of this project was to create a coupled CFD/chemistry solution with the following features:

  • Capability to include and easily change reduced reaction mechanisms
  • Reasonable simulation time performance for sector-mesh DI Diesel cases

Software development

The tools developed have the following characteristics:

  • Thermochemistry: the Open Source package Cantera was used
  • Languages: Fortran 77 and C++

Results

The resulting coupled software package proved to be able to run sector DI Diesel engine simulations with 100+ species. The reaction mechanism can easily be changed.
